Wellington Hayley Jensen, a New Zealand all-rounder, has announced her retirement from international cricket, ending her 11-year career.
After being selected for the 2018 ICC T20 World Cup, Jensen, who made his White Ferns debut in white ball forms against the West Indies in 2014, established himself as a mainstay in the team. He later represented New Zealand 88 times in 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is, amassing 1,988 runs and claiming 76 wickets.
According to Jensen, the timing seemed appropriate to retire from international cricket.
“I knew I wanted to be a WHITE FERN when I was ten years old, after returning home after my first cricket event. I will always be grateful that I got the opportunity to live that dream.
“It’s been an amazing journey, full of growth, challenges, and life-changing moments, all shared with the most amazing group of people I could have ever imagined.” Moving on from something that has meant this much is never easy, but I know deep down that the time has come.
In a statement released by New Zealand, she stated, “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together and even more proud to have been part of the WHITE FERNS environment.”
The 32-year-old played in four ICC Women’s T20 World Cups (2014, 2018, 2020, and 2023) and was a member of the team for the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, which was held in New Zealand. She was the star player in the 2020 tournament, winning Player of the Match with figures of 3-16 in the opening match against Sri Lanka.
She also played a significant role in the team that won bronze in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, defeating England 3–24.
Jensen’s efforts to the club were acknowledged by head coach Ben Sawyer.
Sawyer added, “I want to thank Hayley for her contributions to the WHITE FERNS environment and congratulate her on a fantastic international career.”
“Hayley has always shown a sincere love and enthusiasm for the game and has made significant contributions to the club with both bat and ball on the field. “We hope she has the best future ahead of her,” Sawyer added.
According to NZC, Jensen will decide later on whether or not to play domestic cricket going forward.
