India’s javelin-throw star Neeraj Chopra is aiming for the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial 2025 after finally breaking the 90-meter mark. Chopra hopes to continue the momentum from Doha last week in the tournament on Friday, May 22, in Chorzow, Poland. The player’s third javelin competition of the year will take place at the thrilling Janusz Kusocinski Memorial athletics meet.
With a throw of 84.52 meters in April, the 27-year-old rising javelin star won the Potch Invitational Meet in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Last week, he set a national record and reached a career-best milestone with a throw of 90.23 meters in the Doha Diamond League. For the first time in his playing career, Chopra passed the much-anticipated 90-meter milestone.
Even though Julian Weber of Germany won the Diamond League title with his personal best of 91.06 meters on the last throw, Chopra had enough to celebrate in Doha after reaching the 90-meter mark. At the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial 2025 in Poland, he will have the opportunity to exact revenge for the loss to the former European champion and support his claims to defend the World Championship title in Tokyo later this year.
The two-time world champion and bronze medalist from Paris 2024, Anderson Peters, will also compete in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial. In addition to other prominent competitors, national record holder Marcin Krukowski and Cyprian Mrzygłód will represent the local challenge.
Neeraj Chopra, who was previously slated to participate in the NC Classic in Bengaluru on May 24, is now competing in Poland since the postponement of the tournament freed up his schedule. The Janusz Kusocinski Memorial, named after the renowned Polish long-distance runner Janusz Kusocinski, offers Chopra the opportunity to support his Doha milestone with another. Jan Zelezny of Czechia, who is presently Chopra’s coach, holds the event’s men’s javelin throw record of 91.50 meters. In Poland, the star player will be aiming for the record.
