Overview of the Bird Census in Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, the recent statewide coordinated bird census revealed that out of 37 endangered bird species, 26 were recorded, along with 17 nocturnal bird species. This year's annual bird count placed a strong emphasis on documenting these vulnerable and nocturnal birds.
The two-phase census took place on March 8 and 9 for wetland birds, covering both intertidal and coastal wetlands, and on March 15 and 16 for terrestrial birds, which included areas both within and outside protected zones.
The wetland bird count was conducted at 934 locations, resulting in an estimated total of 552,349 birds across 397 species. According to a statement from Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden Srinivas Reddy, among these, 113,606 were migratory birds, with 49 percent of the counted birds originating from coastal districts. The terrestrial bird count was carried out at 1,093 sites, documenting 232,519 birds from 401 species, including the same number of migratory birds.
