
Donald Trump has claimed a "major prisoner swap" between Russia and Ukraine "could lead to something big". Posting on Truth Social shortly before details were announced by Ukraine, the US President said: "A major prisoners swap was just completed between Russia and Ukraine. It will go into effect shortly. Congratulations to both sides on this negotiation. This could lead to something big???"
Both Ukraine and Russia have confirmed the release of prisoners, with Ukrainian President hailing the move as "very important". 390 prisoners were released on both sides in the first phase of the exchange, comprising of 270 soldiers and 120 civilian detainees. The swap took place at the border with Belarus in northern Ukraine, according to a Ukrainian official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly.
