Actor Mukul Dev, known popularly for his performances in 'Dastak', 'Sarfarosh' and other films and television serials, passed away on Saturday, May 24. He was 54 years old.
Mukul Dev was a name that has consistently echoed in the Indian entertainment industry for decades, not just for his performances across film and television but also for his quiet versatility and dignified screen presence. Whether playing a righteous officer, a ruthless villain, or a humorous sidekick, Mukul brought authenticity and depth to every role he took on.
Early Life and Background
Born on September 30, 1970, in Delhi, Mukul Dev hailed from a Punjabi family with a strong creative streak. His elder brother, Rahul Dev, is also a well-known actor and former model, often recognised for his villainous roles in films. Interestingly, before stepping into the world of cinema, Mukul had an entirely different dream-he trained as a pilot at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Aeronautics in Chandigarh. Aviation was his first love, but fate had other plans.
Career Beginnings
Mukul Dev's foray into the entertainment industry happened in the mid-1990s. He made his acting debut with the film Dastak (1996), which also marked the debut of Miss Universe Sushmita Sen. His relatable screen persona and charming looks made him a household name quickly.

Over the years, Mukul seamlessly moved between films, television, and web content-something not many actors from his generation have managed with such fluidity.
In Bollywood, he's been part of major projects like Yamla Pagla Deewana, Son of Sardaar, R... Rajkumar, and Jai Ho, often seen in supporting yet substantial roles. His portrayal of cops, army men, and government officials is especially noteworthy, thanks to his natural authority and measured delivery.
Mukul has also been a significant presence in regional cinema, especially in Punjabi and Telugu films. His adaptability to different languages and cultures has given him a broad fanbase beyond the Hindi-speaking audience.
On television, he hosted the first season of the crime show Fear Files: Darr Ki Sacchi Tasvirein and appeared in numerous serials, including Kahin Diyaa Jale Kahin Jiyaa and Kahin Kissi Roz. More recently, he's been part of various digital projects, showcasing his ability to stay relevant even in the era of OTT.
A Man of Many Talents
Not just an actor, Mukul Dev had also been a successful model. In his early days, he walked the ramp and featured in several brand campaigns, often admired for his suave looks and sophisticated demeanor. Even today, he carries an effortless elegance that reflects both experience and style.
Personal Life
Mukul Dev prefers to keep his personal life away from public scrutiny. He was known to be close to his brother Rahul Dev, and the two often spoke fondly of each other in interviews. His calm, reflective nature is often mentioned by his co-stars and directors, who praise his professionalism and down-to-earth attitude on set.
