If you from above like most people do, then this is your sign to stop, as the typical method could actually harm your plants rather than benefit them. While it might seem like the soil has absorbed great amounts of water, often, if you take a deeper look, the soil underneath can actually remain "bone dry."

A gardening expert known by the username on has shared an alternative way to water your plants that will ensure the is fed throughout.

Showing himself watering a plant from the top, he starts off with a message to his 1.6 million followers saying: "If you water your potted plants like this, then you may be causing more harm than good".

The expert praised potted plants as a great way to grow crops, especially if you have . However, he warned about watering pots from the top. He said: "Although the soil may seem saturated, dig a little deeper and it can often be bone dry."

Fortunately, Joe provided gardeners with an alternative means of watering. He said: "Instead, try filling up a large tray or container with water and place your plants straight in. The soil will absorb up the water through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot helping to give your plant an even drink all the way throughout."

Those with larger containers can also make use of the handy trick by burying a smaller pot filled with water in the middle of the large container.

That way, the water will go straight to the roots of the plant instead of being soaked up by only the top layer of soil.

One person commented that they had been using the trick "for the past few months" and praised it for being "way better" than the standard method of watering.

Echoing the comment, another added: "Okay the pot in a pot is actually genius."

Some people, however, felt the trick wouldn't work for them because they had too many pots. One person pleaded: "Hey, so I have like 100 pots. Help." Another asked: "I have 40 huge plants in pots. How long will this method take?"

However, concluding the issue, one person said: "I do it on an individual basis. I've had great results."
