Team India: New Test captain appointed for India; squad announced for England series

Mumbai: Amid the ongoing IPL season, the suspense over India’s next Test captain has ended. The BCCI selection committee met on Saturday (May 24) and finalized the Indian squad for the upcoming Test series against England.

Shubman Gill has been appointed the new captain of the Indian men’s Test team. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will serve as the vice-captain.

The selection panel has named an 18-member squad for the England tour, marking a generational shift following the retirements of senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R. Ashwin.

Karnataka’s Karun Nair, who has impressed in domestic cricket and has previous experience playing county cricket in England, has earned a national recall after several years. Before joining the main squad, he will first travel with the India ‘A’ team to England.

Kannada players KL Rahul and Prasidh Krishna have also been included in the squad.

Sai Sudharsan, who showcased strong performances in the IPL, has been selected for the Test series as an opener.

India will play a five-match Test series in England, scheduled from June 20 to August 4. The matches will be held at Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford (Manchester), and Kennington Oval.
