Shubman Gill has officially appointed the new Test captain of India. He will replace Rohit Sharma, who recently retired and will start his captaincy with the five -match series against England from June 20. Gill’s appointment was confirmed by the BCCI with a 15 -member team announced on Saturday. 25 -year -old Gill has become India’s 37th Test captain. With this decision, there have been different captains in all three formats of India. In Gill Test, Suryakumar Yadav in T20 and Rohit Sharma in ODI.
Gill’s captaincy expected
Gill’s captaincy was expected, but this decision of the selectors has also raised some questions. For a long time, Jasprit Bumrah was considered the next Test captain, but injuries affected his continuity. Rishabh Pant was also a strong contender, especially given his performance on foreign soil, but the selectors have given him the top responsibility by making him vice -captain.
Gill’s test record is balanced. In 32 matches, he has scored 1893 runs at an average of more than 35. However, the difference between domestic and foreign performance is obvious. His 649 runs have come on foreign grounds and his highest score has been against 110, Bangladesh.
Gill joined the iconic list
With Test captain, Gill has now joined that prestigious list. It includes some great captains of India like CK Naidu, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Kohli is the most successful captain with 40 wins in 68 Tests, while Dhoni and Ganguly are in second and third positions with 27 and 21 wins respectively.
The youngest Test captain Sachin Tendulkar
So far, only five captains have been able to win more than 10 victories in Tests in the history of India, which shows the challenge of this role. Before the appointment of Gill, the youngest Test was Sachin Tendulkar, who took over this responsibility at the age of 23 years and 169 days. Although he was a great batsman. His record under captaincy was relatively weak, only four out of 25 wins.
