We mainly dream during the Rapid Eye Movement of Sleep. During this state, our eyes activities are more and our brain is very active, just as we are in waking up. The reason why dreams are always strange is to neurochemicals in the brain. Some neurotransmitters (such as acetylocoline and dopamine) are active during sleep. This makes the brain more active and dreams look more colorful and realistic. Also, chemicals such as serotonin, histamine and norpinefrine are suppressed, making dreams more unrealistic.
