Proactive Measures for Paddy Protection
Bhubaneswar: In light of the anticipated pre-monsoon rains, the Odisha government has launched extensive initiatives to protect paddy stocks in mandis during the ongoing Rabi procurement season. This decision follows forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regarding the arrival of rains in the state.
With certain areas already facing unexpected rainfall, the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department has proactively implemented measures to shield paddy from potential weather damage.
To facilitate a seamless procurement process and reduce losses, the department has established essential precautions. Officials have been tasked with informing farmers about the best practices for storing harvested paddy in safe, dry locations.
"Taking precautionary steps is crucial to avert crop damage due to the anticipated rainfall," stated K. Sudarshan Chakravarthy, Managing Director of the Odisha State Civil Supplies Corporation. He has urged officials to hasten the evacuation of paddy from mandis in collaboration with rice millers, stressing that all stock must be adequately covered with high-quality tarpaulin sheets to guard against rain and moisture.
Moreover, directives have been issued to ensure effective drainage systems are in place around storage facilities. Farmers have been alerted about the expected rain, and millers have been instructed to prioritize the collection of paddy stocks.
Additionally, provisions for temporary shelters, drinking water, and Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) have been mandated at all mandis to assist workers and farmers.
A review meeting, co-chaired by Chakravarthy, concluded with a decision to enhance surveillance through CCTV and maintain strict oversight of vehicles transporting paddy from mandis to mills.
