Heavy rainfall and strong winds struck Pakistan on Saturday, claiming the lives of at least 13 people and injuring more than 90 others across the central-eastern Punjab province, according to local authorities.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that over 10 of the fatalities occurred as a result of collapsing structures and unsafe conditions in multiple districts throughout the province. Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, citing PDMA sources, noted that many of the victims were inside mud-brick or otherwise unstable buildings when the structures gave way under the pressure of the storm.

Building collapses cause deaths and injuries in Punjab

In one of the most severe individual incidents, the roof of a local factory collapsed due to high winds, killing 1 worker and seriously injuring 5 others.

Separately, 1 person was confirmed to have died after being struck by lightning. Local authorities also recorded widespread damage to mud-built homes and older structures, particularly in rural parts of the province where housing conditions tend to be more fragile.

The PDMA had issued an alert a day earlier, warning of strong winds, dust storms, and the possibility of rain across various regions of Punjab.

Storm- disruptions are not uncommon in Pakistan during the pre-monsoon season, when sudden weather changes can result in severe damage, especially in areas with inadequate infrastructure. The PDMA has urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unsafe buildings during further weather fluctuations expected in the coming days.

Local rescue and emergency teams have begun relief efforts in the affected areas, though continued weather instability may hamper ongoing operations.
