There's nothing more rewarding than growing your own , and they are fairly easy to grow from seed or a small plant. However, as well as requiring lots of direct sunlight, it's also important to look out for side shoots, according to .
In a tips and tricks May , Monty wrote: "It is time to plant outdoor tomatoes in a greenhouse, although wait until the end of the month for outdoor ones. This is because tomatoes hate too much temperature fluctuation, and May nights can be chilly, especially if the days are warm.
"Plant them deeply, burying them right up to the bottom leaf as the buried section of the stem will develop extra roots."
Monty also advised gardeners to perform one simple five-minute task to encourage the plant to grow better fruit.
As young tomato plants grow, they form shoots between the leaves and the stem, known as side shoots.
Although they grow with extra vigour and do bear trusses of fruit, they "take energy" from the plant and "reduce the overall harvest".
According to the pro, they can also make plants "straggly", so they should be removed as they appear.
Monty added: "The best way to do this is in the morning when the plant is turgid, simply breaking them off with finger and thumb.
"In the evening, they will be limper and may tear the plant, so it should be cut off with a knife."
By removing these side shoots, the plant's energy is directed towards the main stem and fruit development, rather than being wasted on producing extra foliage.

Pinching out side shoots can also help prevent diseases and pests from spreading, as it reduces the overall size and complexity of the plant.
As well as pinching out side shoots and providing at least six hours of sunshine per day, it's important to water tomato plants properly.
To do so, focus on deep watering at the base of the plant, ensuring the soil is evenly moist and avoiding wetting the foliage.
In the summer, they'll need watering one to two times per day in order to thrive.
