Lyon and Strasbourg both hope PSG will win the Coupe de France final, considering tonight’s result will have huge implications on their finances. Lyon have finished the season in 6th place, far from the Champions League spots that could have relieved the club’s finances. Gones are set to face the DNCG – Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion, French football’s financial watchdog – on June 24th for a crunch meeting that could define their future. Lyon have been handed a provisional Ligue 2 relegation and a transfer ban.
With a 6th-place finish, Gones have qualified for the Conference League playoffs round. But their European fate would be upgraded with a Europa League campaign should PSG win tonight’s Coupe de France, thus preventing relegation-battling Reims from qualifying for the Europa League. The Coupe de France winners qualify for Europe’s second-tier tournament. Of course, PSG are already qualified for the Champions League as Ligue 1 champions.
Should Reims lose tonight’s Coupe de France final, the second Europa League spot for Ligue 1 clubs would go to sixth-placed Lyon. In this case, the Conference League playoffs round spot would go to the team just below Gones: 7th-placed Strasbourg. The BlueCo-owned Alsatians have never played in Europe since 2019, and a loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League qualifying rounds.
