Heavy rains continue to lash DK and Udupi; Red alert issued for Coastal Karnataka

Widespread rainfall continued across Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday, with intermittent showers observed throughout the day. In Mangaluru city, the day began with intense rainfall followed by cloudy weather, and heavy showers resumed in the afternoon.

Rainfall measurements recorded in various taluks include: Belthangady – 60.3 mm, Bantwal – 43.2 mm, Mangaluru – 27.8 mm, Puttur – 48 mm, Sullia – 46.6 mm, Moodbidri – 75.1 mm, Kadaba – 62.9 mm, Mulki – 42.9 mm, and Ullal – 29.5 mm. Overall, Dakshina Kannada district received an average of 52.4 mm of rainfall compared to the usual 10.9 mm for this period.

On May 28, two houses were reported to be fully damaged, and seven houses partially damaged. Additionally, 225 electric poles, 13 transformers, and 11.25 km of power lines were affected. Disaster response teams have been deployed: a 25-member NDRF team is stationed in Puttur, a 15-member SDRF team in Mangaluru, and a 10-member team with 25 boats is prepared for emergency rescue operations in Subrahmanya.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for May 29 in coastal Karnataka, predicting extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm, accompanied by strong winds and high sea waves. An Orange Alert has also been issued for May 30.

Udupi district also witnessed continuous rainfall on Wednesday, with strong winds and rain prevailing from morning to evening. Based on IMD forecasts, an Orange Alert remains in place until May 30.

On Tuesday night, strong wind and rain caused extensive damage across the district. MESCOM reported that 50 electric poles were uprooted, and two transformers were damaged, with loss assessments still underway.

In Kundapura taluk, seven houses were partially damaged. One house each in Karkala, Kaup, and Brahmavar taluks were also damaged after trees fell on them. Arecanut plantations in Ajri and Korgi (Kundapura) and cattle sheds in Shankaranarayana and Uppinakudru suffered structural damage.

Due to the persistent high-speed winds, power outages continue to disrupt daily life, with electricity frequently going on and off across the district, leading to a range of inconveniences for residents.
