Disappointing Start for Manchester United
Manchester United's post-season tour in Asia, valued at £8 million, began on a sour note as they suffered a 1-0 defeat against the ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur. The match, held at the Bukit Jalil Stadium, saw over 72,000 fans express their disappointment, particularly after Maung Maung Lwin scored the decisive goal in the second half.
Head coach Ruben Amorim took full accountability for the team's lackluster performance, stating, "I always feel responsible... I bear the weight of the team's performance, regardless of the circumstances." He acknowledged the fans' negative reactions, suggesting it could act as a crucial wake-up call for the squad. "They have always supported us during our Premier League losses," he noted.
Amorim admitted that the team's performance was below expectations, remarking, "We need to do better... Our pace was lacking, and we haven't yet developed the winning mentality in training or matches." He also mentioned that some players were at risk of injury, but the team prioritized giving them playing time to honor the fans. "We had to respect our supporters and field all players, even if some were at risk, and we should have won these types of matches."
This defeat followed closely on the heels of Manchester United's loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final. Amorim had previously assured fans that "better days are ahead" after a challenging season, but the recent performance has sparked concerns.
When asked about potential player transfers, Amorim remained non-committal, stating, "You'll have to wait until next season for that... It's up to you in the media to discuss it." Despite speculation regarding a possible transfer for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, he refrained from confirming any deals but hinted at upcoming changes, saying, "There will be some adjustments."
Manchester United's Asia tour will proceed with a friendly match against Hong Kong scheduled for Friday.
