Schools Shut In Kerala Amid IMD's Red Alert For Rain
ABP Live News | May 30, 2025 1:11 PM CST

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a spell of intense weather activity across northwest India as the southwest monsoon continues its seasonal progression. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are expected to impact the region over the next several days. Due to ongoing heavy rainfall, district administrations in Kerala have declared a one-day holiday for all educational institutions on May 30.

The decision, prompted by safety concerns arising from the relentless downpours, was announced by the district collectors of Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta, as per a report on Manorama.

Red Alert In Kerala

Southern India, however, remains under heightened alert. On May 30, states including Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala, as well as the hilly terrains of Tamil Nadu, are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall. This surge in precipitation is linked to a deep depression that moved inland through West Bengal from the Northwest Bay of Bengal on May 29.

Kerala and Lakshadweep are forecast to see widespread rain and thundershowers. A Red Alert has been issued for the districts of Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod, while much of the rest of Kerala is under an Orange Alert for the same day. On May 31, the IMD has placed all Kerala districts under a Yellow Alert as conditions are expected to ease.

In Tamil Nadu, the Nilgiris and ghat areas of Coimbatore are likely to receive very heavy rain. Other districts including Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari may see isolated heavy showers, with possible rain extending into Tiruppur and Dindigul.

Rainfall Predicted In Delhi, Mumbai

Delhi and nearby areas are bracing for turbulent weather with the IMD issuing an Orange Alert, reported The Mint. The capital is forecast to see cloudy skies, moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching up to 70 kmph during storms. Lightning and thunderstorms are also likely through the evening.

In western India, Mumbai is anticipated to get a respite from the recent deluge, as weather conditions gradually stabilize.
