Navi Mumbai: In a step towards combating the rising oral cancer epidemic in India, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai (AHNM) has launched the #IPromise screening program, a comprehensive initiative aimed at early detection of oral cancer. The program, unveiled on World No Tobacco Day on Friday, focuses on raising awareness, routine screening, and targeted interventions for high-risk groups, particularly tobacco and alcohol users.

Oral cancer remains a significant health concern in India, accounting for nearly one-third of global cases. According to the latest data, India sees 77,000 new oral cancer cases and 52,000 related deaths annually, with survival rates lingering at just 50%—a stark contrast to higher rates in developed countries. The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (2022–23) highlights increased tobacco consumption across urban and rural India, further compounding the problem.

“Tobacco users are 6 to 7 times more likely to develop oral cancer than non-users. Oral cancer is one of the few cancers that can be detected early through a simple examination. Our goal is to catch it early—before it’s too late,” said Dr. Anil Dcruz, Director Oncology and Sr Head and Neck Onco Surgeon at AHNM.

The #IPromise program involves a comprehensive visual and tactile oral examination performed by trained oncologists, aimed at identifying early warning signs such as persistent ulcers, red or white patches, lumps, and non-healing sores—many of which go unnoticed in the early stages.

AHNM has also partnered with local community groups and corporate organizations to provide support for tobacco users, integrating physical health interventions with mental and emotional wellness support. “Our objective is to foster a culture of preventive healthcare. We urge everyone over 30, especially tobacco users, to undergo screening,” Dr. Dcruz added.

Arunesh Punetha, Regional CEO Western Region, Apollo Hospitals, emphasized the broader vision behind the initiative. “This campaign is not just about screening—it’s about empowering individuals with the knowledge to take control of their health. We call on tobacco users to re-evaluate the true cost of their habits, in terms of both physical health and emotional well-being.”
