In response to persistent and intense rainfall across Kerala, several district administrations have declared a rain holiday for educational institutions on Saturday. Authorities in Kottayam, Kollam, and Idukki confirmed the suspension of classes for schools, colleges, Anganwadis, tuition centres, summer camps, and religious study centres.
However, despite the announcement, examinations scheduled earlier will proceed as planned.
Yellow Alert Across Kerala
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala, forecasting heavy rainfall ranging between 7 and 11 cm over the next 24 hours. Although a slight dip in intensity is expected, the alert remains in place for districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kasaragod, among others.
According to IMD, "Yellow alert has been issued to districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur & Kasaragod."
Since April, Kerala has witnessed extreme weather patterns with 27 fatalities reported due to rain-related incidents, as per a report on Manorama. Districts like Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Kottayam have seen widespread damage from strong winds and continuous showers.
Rainfall Activity In Kerala
On Friday, the situation escalated in Ernakulam as a red alert was declared. Coastal neighbourhoods such as Kannamaly and Chellanam are grappling with severe flooding as sea water surged into residential areas. Inundated homes have left many residents stranded without relief.
According to the IMD, the current monsoon activity — spanning from March 1 to May 28 — has resulted in substantial excess rainfall across the state. Districts including Thrissur, Wayanad, Palakkad, and Kozhikode have recorded far above average precipitation. The southwest monsoon remains vigorous, bringing widespread downpours to both Kerala and the Lakshadweep archipelago.
Emergency services remain on high alert as local authorities work to restore power and provide relief to flood-affected areas. Residents are urged to remain cautious and follow weather advisories.
