ENG vs WI 2025: Joe Root surpasses Eoin Morgan to become England's leading run-scorer in ODIs (Source: X)
etched his name in English cricket history by eclipsing Eoin Morgan to top the run-scoring charts in ODI cricket. This fantastic milestone was attained during his knock against West Indies in the recently-concluded second ODI of the three-match series against West Indies at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
Root took 39 innings less than Morgan to get past the former World Cup-winning skipper's tally of 6,957 runs. The ace batter ended up the game with a top score of 166*, which came off just 139 deliveries to seal a three-wicket victory with seven balls to spare.
Below is the list of the top five leading run-getters for England in ODI cricket (as of June 1, 2025):
Player | Matches | Innings | Runs |
Joe Root | 179 | 168 | 7,082 |
Eoin Morgan | 225 | 207 | 6,957 |
Ian Bell | 161 | 157 | 5,416 |
Jos Buttler | 189 | 162 | 5,233 |
Paul Collingwood | 197 | 181 | 5,092 |
Root's magnificent knock comprised 21 fours and two sixes. The former English skipper also became the fifth fastest to 7,000 ODI runs. Fittingly so, he hit the winning runs on the fifth ball of the penultimate over of the game to seal the deal.
lead the series by a 2-0 margin. They won the series opener by a whopping 238-run margin. Kennington Oval will host the third and final game of the 50-over format before the commencement of the T20I series after a brief stopover. The hosts would be keen on closing out the series with yet another victory.
Root is one ton away from equalling the likes of batting greats such as Mahela Jayawardene and Brian Lara. The two maestros of the game took far greater number of innings to achieve the same number of tons which Root may well achieve in the upcoming dead rubber on Tuesday, June 3.
