
After leading Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final, former India cricketer Robin Uthappa backs Shreyas Iyer to become future India captain.

Shreyas Iyer’s innings against Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 will be remembered as one of the finest knocks by a captain in T20 franchise history. Leading Punjab Kings, Iyer played an unbeaten 87 off 41 balls, including 8 sixes and 5 fours, to chase down a massive target of 204 runs and secure Punjab’s first IPL final appearance since 2014.
This victory sets up a thrilling final showdown with Royal Challengers Bengaluru on June 3, which has guranteed a new IPL champion since 2022, when Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, won their maiden title.
After the PBKS victory, Robin Uthappa took yo his X account (formerly twitter) and wrote that one day Shreyas Iyer will lead the Indian cricket team.
“I’ve said this time and again and I’ll say it AGAIN!! Iyer will captain India in multiple formats!! He has to!! He’s that good,” Uthappa wrote on X.
Shreyas Iyer displayed great composure and maturity during his innings, building together a vital 84-run partnership with Nehal Wadhera. Even after the dismissals of Josh Inglis and Wadhera, he maintained the momentum for PBKS in the high-pressure chase.
