WhatsApp, the go-to messaging app for millions, has always managed to stay relevant with useful features-without ever losing its clean, user-friendly vibe. From disappearing messages to companion device support, the app keeps evolving. Now, it’s gearing up for a game-changing privacy upgrade that might just redefine how we use it.
Say Hello to Usernames
Yes, you heard that right! WhatsApp is finally planning to introduce usernames. That means you’ll soon be able to chat without handing out your phone number. Instead, you’ll create a unique handle, just like on Instagram or Telegram.
This highly requested feature was recently spotted in a beta version by WABetaInfo. Though not public yet, it’s clear WhatsApp is fine-tuning it for launch very soon.
How It Will Work
Once usernames are rolled out, you’ll be able to pick a handle made of lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, orperiodso fancy symbols or web-style prefixes allowed. Each username must include at least one letter. Pick one successfully, and WhatsApp will celebrate with a little confetti animation!
More importantly, when someone without your number tries to connect, they’ll see your username instead of your digits-perfect for group chats or networking safely.
Transparency Comes Built-In
Change your username later? WhatsApp will alert your contacts with a system message, much like it does when you update your profile picture or phone number. Transparency, check.
Can You Hide Your Number from Everyone?
Not just yet. Current details suggest this feature only hides your number from new contacts who don’t already have it. Whether a full privacy mode will follow is still under wraps.
Username Availability Checker Incoming
To make things easier, WhatsApp is also working on a tool to check if your desired username is taken. This feature may debut first on WhatsApp Web.
When Is It Coming?
There’s no official release date, but with active beta testing underway, it seems we’re not far from seeing it live. And when it does arrive, it’ll be a big win for anyone who wants to keep their number private but still stay connected.
