Legal Action Initiated in Assam
Guwahati, June 3: The Assam administration has filed a case against Wazahat Khan Qadri Rashidi, a Kolkata resident, for allegedly making offensive comments about Hindu deities, including Goddess Kamakhya. This was confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.
During a press briefing following a meeting with Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Sarma mentioned that Assam has reached out to the West Bengal government, requesting their assistance in extraditing the accused for legal action. He remarked, “Only time will reveal their response and willingness to assist us.”
In a subsequent post on X, the Chief Minister stated, “In light of the unacceptable remarks made by an individual against Devi Maa Kamakhya, a case has been filed by @assampolice, and we will seek the cooperation of the West Bengal Government to bring the individual to Assam for legal proceedings.”
Previously, Rashidi had lodged a complaint against law student and social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli, accusing her of making communal statements and disrespecting Islam. Panoli was arrested and placed in 14 days of judicial custody by a Kolkata court.
Now, Rashidi himself is under investigation for a series of social media posts that are said to insult various Hindu deities.
