
Critical Flood Situation in Assam
Guwahati, June 3: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the escalating flood crisis in Assam, pledging comprehensive assistance from the central government for ongoing relief and rehabilitation initiatives.
In a social media update, CM Sarma shared, “Earlier today, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji contacted me to inquire about the current flood conditions in Assam. I informed him that persistent rainfall in Assam and neighboring regions has resulted in severe flooding, affecting numerous lives.”
Sarma further noted that he briefed the Prime Minister on the relief efforts being implemented by the state government.
He stated, “The Hon’ble PM expressed his concern and assured us of the Central Government's full support for our relief and rehabilitation endeavors. I am thankful for his guidance and steadfast support to the people of Assam.”
As of Tuesday, the flood situation in Assam is dire, with over 535,000 individuals impacted across 22 districts.
The state has reported an additional flood-related death in the past 24 hours, raising the total fatalities due to floods and landslides this season to 11, as per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The most recent fatality occurred in the Doboka revenue circle of Hojai district. Furthermore, two individuals—one from Hailakandi and another from Dibrugarh—are currently unaccounted for.
According to the ASDMA report, 515,039 people across 65 revenue circles and 1,254 villages have been affected. Numerous relief camps have been established in the impacted districts.
Fifteen rivers in Assam are currently above the danger level. The Brahmaputra is overflowing at Neamatighat and Tezpur, while the Barak is swollen at Chota Bekra, Fulertal, AP Ghat, and BP Ghat.
Other rivers exceeding danger levels include the Subansiri (Badatighat), Burhidihing (Khowang), Dhansiri (Numaligarh), Kopili (Kampur and Dharamtul), Rukni (Dholai), Dhaleswari (Gharmura), Katakhal (Matizuri), and Kushiyara (Sribhumi).
Relief and rescue operations are actively being conducted by district administrations and disaster response teams, even as forecasts predict additional rainfall in various parts of the state in the coming days.
