According to reports Rajesh Khanna was madly in love with Anju Mahendru before marrying Dimple Kapadia. The two were in a live-in relationship and had serious commitment that lasted for seven years from 1966 to 1972. However their relationship fell apart due to several reasons majorly compatibility issues. In an interview with Screen Anuj revealed that Khannas possessive nature and orthodox thinking conflicted with her modern perspective. The actress revealed that he wouldnt let her wear skirts but when she would wear a saree he would question her that too. She said I know it’s a contradiction but then Rajesh Khanna is like that. Confusion was a part of our relationship. If I wore a skirt he’d snap why don’t you wear a saree? If I wore a saree he’d wrinkle his nose and say why are you trying to project a Bhartiya nari look?’. In the same conversation Anuj highlighted how straightforward she was with her opinions even when it came to Khannas movies- good bad or ugly. However the criticism never settled with him which urged Anuj to praise him unwantedly. She said I was critical because that’s how I am. If he was bad I always said so. Why should I have praised him just to keep him happy? There were plenty around to boost his ego. He has always been sensitive to criticism and I’ve always been very frank. Reports state that Rajesh Khanna wanted to marry Anuj Mahendru one day but their relationship faced many challenges. One of significant reasons behind their breakup was the involvement of Gary Sobers  the West Indies cricketer. Speculations circulated about Anujs alleged affair with him which enraged Khanna and he decided to part his ways forever.
