UGC, Mumbai University To Host 'VIKAS 2025' Conference On Industry-Academia Collaboration And Skilling On June 6

Mumbai: The University Grants Commission (UGC), in collaboration with the University of Mumbai, will organise a one-day national-level conference titled ‘VIKAS 2025’ (Venturing into Industry Knowledge, Apprenticeship and Skilling) on 6 June 2025.

The event will take place from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm at the Sir Cowasji Jehangir Convocation Hall at the university’s Fort Campus, with the aim of strengthening the interface between industry and academia and promoting effective implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP).

The conference will witness participation from vice-chancellors and education experts from universities across India. Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Dada Patil will deliver the keynote address at the closing session.

Former UGC Chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar, current UGC Vice Chairman Prof Deepak Kumar Srivastava, former NCVET Chairman Dr Nirmaljeet Singh Kalsi, and University of Mumbai Vice-Chancellor Prof Ravindra Kulkarni will be among the key speakers.

The event will also feature contributions from Prof Ranapratap Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Gautam Buddha University; Prof Milind Atre from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay; Rajeev Dubey, former Group President at Mahindra & Mahindra; Prof Ujwala Chakradev, Vice-Chancellor of SNDT Women’s University; Bharat Amalkar from the AEDP Taskforce; and Principal Anil Rao.

Prof Kulkarni will open the conference with a welcome address, followed by Prof Jagadesh Kumar who will outline the vision behind the event. Dr Kalsi will present on key frameworks such as the National Credit Framework (NCrF), the National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF), and the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF). Prof Ranapratap Singh will discuss the guiding principles of the Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP), standard operating procedures, and SWAYAM Plus modules certified by the UGC.

Other sessions will focus on strengthening industry collaboration and co-creating curricula, with Prof Milind Atre offering guidance on the subject. Rajeev Dubey will speak on designing apprenticeship plans and operationalising AEDP-integrated degree programmes. Prof Chakradev will address strategies to empower faculty for experiential learning, while Bharat Amalkar and Principal Rao will highlight the importance of aligning institutional skill policies with regional industrial and local skill demands.

The University of Mumbai will also present its structural roadmap for implementing AEDP and increasing industry participation in apprenticeship-integrated degree programmes.

In the valedictory session, Prof Jagadesh Kumar will summarise the key takeaways from the day-long deliberations. The event will conclude with an address by Minister Chandrakant Patil.

According to Dr Avichal Kapoor, Joint Secretary of UGC, and Prof Kavita Laghate, the nodal officer for the conference, around 500 dignitaries from Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat are expected to attend the western regional edition of the VIKAS conference. The initiative is part of UGC’s broader effort to build a robust academic-industrial ecosystem that better prepares students for the workforce and national development
