Varanasi: IIT-BHU has developed a real-time sensor system that can instantly alert divers and water police if someone starts drowning in a river or pond. Designed like an ECG device, this portable unit monitors key physiological and positional indicators, sending emergency alerts directly to mobile phones.

Developed by Dr. Prasenjit Chanak and his team from the Department of Computer Science and Technology, the “Curb-Drowning Monitoring System” uses advanced sensor technology and data analytics to detect early signs of drowning, including changes in heart rate and movement patterns. It is battery-operated and capable of 24/7 surveillance.

The device also provides the precise location of the individual, enabling rescue personnel to respond in real time. This innovation aims to protect bathers, swimmers, and fishermen throughout the day.

IIT-BHU has already secured a patent for the technology, marking a significant step in preventive water safety. This system combines wearable tech and life-saving utility, offering a scientific edge to manual vigilance efforts. It has the potential to drastically reduce drowning incidents in India’s rivers and water bodies.
