In the year 2025, Nirjala Ekadashi will be celebrated on Friday, June 6. According to the Hindu calendar, this fast is kept on Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month and it is considered the best and difficult of all the Ekadashi of the year. On this day Lord Vishnu is worshiped and devotees fast without drinking water, without consuming food. It is believed that by observing this fast, a person gets the fruit of 24 Ekadashis of the year together and all his sins are destroyed.

Nirjala Ekadashi is also called ‘Bhimseni Ekadashi’ or ‘Pandav Ekadashi’. There is a legend behind it. According to the legend, once Mahabali Bhimsen told Maharishi Ved Vyas that they cannot fast for all Ekadashis because they feel very hungry and it is not possible to live without food. Then Ved Vyas advised him to fast on Nirjala Ekadashi.

Ved Vyas told special Ekadashi

Ved Vyas told that if he observes only Nirjala Ekadashi fast in the year, then he will get the virtue of all 24 Ekadashi. This fast is kept by renunciation of both food and water. Bhima boldly observed this difficult fast, but due to living without food and water overnight, he became unconscious in the morning. Then his brothers brought him to his senses with Ganga water, Tulsi Patra and Charanamrit. Since then, this Ekadashi came to be known as Bhimseni Ekadashi.

Religious and spiritual significance of fasting

By observing the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi, a person gets all four efforts – religion, meaning, work and salvation. It is believed that this fast not only destroys sins but also gives salvation after death. On this day, donations, especially water filled with water, clothes and food, get many times the fruit.

Best opportunity for spiritual practice

This fast is a test of self -control, patience and reverence. Fasting, meditation, bhajan and worshiping Srihari Vishnu brings positive energy in life. The virtue done on this day is permanent and Lord Vishnu fulfills every wish of his devotees.
