Investigation Launched After Six Deaths Linked to Alleged Wrong Injections in Odisha Hospital

Tragic Incident at Koraput Medical College

Following the tragic deaths of six individuals due to alleged incorrect injections at a government hospital in Odisha, state medical authorities have initiated an investigation. This incident occurred at the Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, located in the southern region of Odisha. The deceased hailed from various areas within the undivided Koraput and Kalahandi districts.


Details of the Fatalities

Sushant Sahu, the superintendent of Koraput Medical College, reported that four patients died in the ICU, while one passed away in the surgical ward. Among the deceased, one patient was suffering from stage four cervical cancer, while three others had sustained severe abdominal injuries from knife wounds, and another had serious liver issues. Additionally, one patient had suffered a severe head injury due to a road accident. Sources from the hospital indicated that all five patients died between 10 PM and 11 PM, with their conditions being critical.


Calls for Accountability

Opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal and Congress, have demanded accountability for those responsible for the patients' deaths. The fatalities occurred within a short span, with three men and three women losing their lives. The last patient succumbed around 3:30 AM on Wednesday. Family members of the deceased have alleged that the injections administered were the cause of their deaths. Superintendent Sushant Kumar Sahu confirmed that a departmental inquiry has been ordered.


Formation of a Medical Panel

In response to the incident, the Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) in Odisha has established a panel of five senior doctors from two major medical colleges in the state. This panel is expected to submit its report by Thursday evening.
