Hosts England announced the squad for the first Test against India of the five-match series starting at Headingley on June 20. All-rounder Ben Stokes has recovered from injury and will be leading the team at Leeds. The England selectors have recalled Surrey all-rounder who was also MS Dhoni’s teammate at Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025 season Jamie Overton for the first Test for the first time since he made his debut against New Zealand at the same venue in June 2022. The 31-year-old had sustained a broken right little finger during the ODI against the West Indies on May 29 but continues to be assessed and reviewed daily by the England medical team. Overton will replace his Surrey teammate and all-rounder Gus Atkinson who is unavailable for selection due to a right hamstring injury sustained during the recent Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge. Durham seamer Brydon Carse and the Warwickshire pair Jacob Bethell and Chris Woakes are included in the squad having last featured during the Test tour of New Zealand in December. Bethell was part of IPL 2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru this season but returned home before the Playoffs stage. A simply HUGE series awaits 🙌 Our squad for the 1st Test is HERE 👇 🏴 #ENGvIND 🇮🇳 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 5 2025 England will miss the services of Mark Wood and Jofra Archer for the first Test due to injuries. While Wood and Olly Stone are out of the entire series due to knee injuries Rajasthan Royals pacer Archer will not be match-fit before the 2nd Test due to a thumb issue. Bethell’s return will create a dilemma for the selectors after his impressive run of three fifties at the No. 3 position had put pressure on openers Zak Crawley and batter Ollie Pope. However both Crawley and Pope score impressive centuries in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe last month. The five-match series starts at Headingley before moving onto Edgbaston Lords and Old Trafford and will finish at the Kia Oval in London. India who have not won a Test series in England since 2007 have sent several members of their Test squad ahead of the series to play for India A against the Lions and the remaining touring party will arrive in the UK on Friday. England squad for first Test: Shoaib Bashir Jacob Bethell Harry Brook Brydon Carse Sam Cook Zak Crawley Ben Duckett Jamie Overton Ollie Pope Joe Root Jamie Smith (wk) Ben Stokes (c) Josh Tongue Chris Woakes
