Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently revealed what he intends to do with his massive $200 billion fortune — and its not for his children. Giving a speech in Addis Ababa the capital city of Ethiopia the 69-year-old said his vast fortune will mostly go towards enhancing healthcare and education in Africa within the next 20 years. “I recently made a commitment that my wealth will be given away over the next 20 years” Gates said at the African Union headquarters. “Most of that funding will help you tackle challenges here in Africa.” He intends to donate 99% of his wealth by the year 2045. At that point his foundation—the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—will have shut down. The foundations principal objectives are to lower maternal and infant deaths combat infectious diseases and enable millions of individuals to free themselves from poverty. Gates also challenged youth in Africa to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance healthcare. According to him Africa bypassed old-fashioned banking through the use of mobile phones and now it is an excellent opportunity to incorporate AI into the next generation of health systems. He cited Rwanda where AI-facilitated ultrasounds are already assisting in the identification of dangerous pregnancies. I have spent a lot of time thinking about that quote lately. People will say a lot of things about me when I die but I am determined that he died rich will not be one of them. There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people. That is why I have decided to give my money back to society much faster than I had originally planned. I will give away virtually all my wealth through the Gates Foundation over the next 20 years to the cause of saving and improving lives around the world.
