Vietnam led Southeast Asia in attracting Chinese tourists in the first quarter of this year with 1.6 million arrivals, driven by high levels of safety and affordable travel costs.
The high levels of safety, proximity and affordable travel costs are driving a surge in the number of Chinese visiting Vietnam, according to tourism experts.
Thailand, once the most popular destination for Chinese tourists in Southeast Asia, now ranked second with 1.3 million as it struggles with safety concerns following the kidnapping of Chinese actor Xing Xing in January.
Thailand has been hit by a tourism crisis as foreign arrival numbers, especially Chinese have been plummeting.
Malaysia came in third with 1.1 million Chinese tourists, followed by Singapore (831,000).
Malaysia recently announced the extension of visa exemption for Chinese travelers for another five years, with an option to extend it for an additional five years until 2036, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said.
