The effect of climate change is now clearly visible in every corner of the world. In the last 12 months, about half of the world's population i.e. about 400 crore people have had to endure an average of 30 additional extremely hot days. This increased heat has been much more than the normal hot days recorded between 1991 and 2020. Its direct effect was also felt in India.
People in the country had to face intense heat for 20 additional days a year. This number was recorded as 44 in Arunachal Pradesh, and 22 in Jammu and Kashmir. These were the days when the temperature was much higher than its normal level and its serious effect was seen on the body. This information has been given in an international report. This report titled Global Increase in climate change and extreme heat has been presented by scientists from World Weather Attribution, Climate Central, and Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Center on World Heat Action Day. It has done an in-depth analysis of the heat in the period from May 2024 to May 2025.
Double increase in hot days
According to the report, the number of extremely hot days has doubled in the last 12 months in 195 countries and regions. During this period, 67 heatwave incidents were recorded, in which climate change affected each incident. These incidents not only affected health but also property and quality of life. Heat is now becoming not just a season but a man-made disaster.
Increase in natural disasters
According to the report, the abnormal heat events recorded in Central Asia in March 2025 and the Pacific Islands in May 2024 show the magnitude of climate change. If climate change had not occurred, the temperature in these areas would have been 10 degrees Celsius lower and the probability of these incidents would have been 69 times less.
The effect of heat is not limited to the body only. It is affecting agriculture, water resources, power supply, health services, and social systems.
Farmers, workers, children and the elderly are being affected the most by this crisis. Adverse effects like water shortage, power cuts, and impact on work are being seen in cities. Problems like tension, violence, and social imbalance have also started emerging.
