Mumbai: A shocking incident took place on June 4 aboard the LTT-Nanded Special Express near Nanded, where a robbery attempt targeted a doctor couple. During the incident, the woman fell from the moving train, and her husband jumped after her, resulting in the amputation of his left hand.
According to the FIR, the complainant, Deepali Deshmukh, 44, an Ayurvedic doctor residing in Panvel, was travelling with her husband, Yogesh Deshmukh, 50, also a doctor, and their 9-year-old daughter, Shraddha. They had arrived at LTT Terminus with the intention of travelling to Latur to visit her sister-in-law, Varsha Kulkarni.
Their journey began at 3:35 a.m. from LTT Terminus. They had reserved sleeper seats—numbers 2, 4, and 5—in the S4 coach of the LTT-Nanded Special Express. After the train departed, Deepali was sleeping on the middle berth with her purse hanging on her shoulder. Her husband was resting on the upper berth, and their daughter was on the lower berth in front of her.
Fifteen to twenty minutes after the train departed and while it was moving slowly between Kanjurmarg and Bhandup stations, an unidentified man entered the coach. He was approximately six feet tall, well-built, with a wheatish complexion, and was wearing a almond colour shirt.
The man tried to snatch the handbag hanging on Deepali’s shoulder. During the scuffle, he pulled her out of the moving train along with the bag, causing her to suffer serious injuries. Hearing the commotion, her husband woke up and, upon seeing his wife being dragged out, jumped from the train. He lost his balance, fell, and his left hand was severed from the corner.
The assailant fled the scene immediately. Despite her injuries, Deepali managed to walk to the nearest road with her husband. They hired a rickshaw and then a tempo to reach Fortis Hospital in Mulund. A friend of her husband arrived at the hospital to assist them.
Although the attacker failed to steal any belongings, both Deepali and her husband were seriously injured. She later lodged a complaint at the Kurla Railway Police Station. Based on her statement, the railway police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
