History of Kathi Roll

Kathi roll is a street food that is economical as well as perfect for filling your stomach. If we talk about the history of Kathi roll, it was available at a small shop named Nizam in the Hog Market area of Esplanade, Kolkata. In 1932, Raza Hasan Saheb sold kebabs and parathas in different ways in this shop. People used to come from far and wide to taste it.

Moreover, Nizam was using heavy iron skewers to fry his kebabs, which became a problem as demand increased. When the demand for ords increased, he changed the way of cooking kebabs. He started frying the meat on bamboo skewers or 'kathi' (Bengali word for stick). So that customers could eat the kebabs quickly. Since then it was named Kathi Roll and today it is famous all over India.

By what name was Kathi Roll known in Mumbai before Kolkata

Before the Kathi Roll came to Kolkata, a dish called Frankie was available in Mumbai. Slowly, this Kathi Roll sold in Kolkata became a famous street food of India. Kusum Roll on Park Street, established in 1971, popularized the use of paneer in the filling of Kathi Roll, while Hot Kathi Roll on the roadside introduced wraps with deep fried parathas for a more delicious meal.

Even today in Kolkata, along with sweets, stalls of Kathi rolls are also set up in Durga Puja pandals where a huge crowd gathers. People also sell it outside schools and colleges and children like to eat it with great gusto. Kathi rolls are available not only in Kolkata but in many parts of India. It is a street food but now it has made its place even in big 5 star restaurants.
