Motorists have been left stunned as experts reveal that headrests serve a more crucial role than mere comfort - doubling up as a potential lifesaving tool in emergencies. While it's commonly known that headrests, compulsory in all UK and diesel , cushion the neck during accidents and mitigate whiplash impacts, there's an additional use many drivers might be oblivious to.

According to the experts at Swansway Motor Group, these seemingly innocuous components could be secret escape artists in perilous situations. Though not originally intended for such dramatic purposes, the motor pros suggest that detachable headrests might just smash windows to free trapped occupants when doors won't open.

A spokesperson from Swansway Motor Group highlighted the import of knowing this alternative function: "While it may seem odd that a headrest can be fully removed from a seat, it is important that drivers and their passengers are aware of its potentially lifesaving use."

The Swansway representative provided some tips on how to wield this unexpected escape gadget effectively: "Most headrests can easily be detached by pressing the button at the bottom and pulling the headrest out from the seat."

The motoring authority further warned would-be escape artists: "We advise that you assess the situation you are in and if you do choose this method to escape your vehicle, you are wary of the dangers of shattered glass."

If motorists find themselves trapped inside their vehicle and need to make a quick exit, they should remove the headrests from their seats.

The metal rods can then be inserted into the gap between the window and the car door, reports . With sufficient force, the window glass is likely to break, providing drivers with a way to escape the vehicle in mere seconds.

user @BattlBox previously demonstrated that this tip does indeed work by successfully smashing a car window using a headrest.

It took less than five seconds and fewer than six attempts for the spikes on the bottom of the headrest to shatter the glass.
