Mahua Moitra Marries Pinaki Mishra in Berlin Palace Ceremony
Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra has tied the knot with former Puri MP Pinaki Mishra in a private ceremony held on the rooftop of a historic palace in Berlin, Germany, on Friday, May 30. The wedding marks the second marriage for both – Mahua is 51 and Pinaki is 65. Their relationship, nurtured over several years of friendship, was known to close associates who had anticipated this union.
While destination weddings in foreign countries or grand Indian palaces are common among celebrities—actors, actresses, and sportspersons—such an event involving two politicians is rare in India. However, sources close to the couple emphasized that this wasn't a typical “destination wedding.” Berlin was chosen to avoid the attention and crowd a wedding in India might attract.
Mahua reportedly informed Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee about her plans and took formal leave to travel abroad for the ceremony. The couple is currently in Europe for their honeymoon and is expected to return to India by the end of June. Trinamool’s National General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, has extended his wishes to the newlyweds.
This is not the first time a public figure has opted for a wedding abroad. In 2019, actress-turned-MP Nusrat Jahan had a destination wedding in Bodrum, Turkey. However, unlike Nusrat—who entered politics from the film industry—both Mahua and Pinaki are seasoned politicians. Pinaki is also a practicing lawyer, making this a rare and notable political union.
Mahua Moitra and Pinaki Mishra: A Personal and Political Journey to Marriage
Mahua Moitra had a long and successful career at the American investment firm JPMorgan Chase, where she rose to the position of Vice President. During that time, she met Danish financier Lars Brorson. The two married, but the relationship later ended in divorce. Lars remarried and now has a child.
Pinaki Mishra, on the other hand, was first married to Sangeeta Mishra from Odisha. They have a son and a daughter. That marriage also ended in divorce several years ago.
At one point, Mahua was in a relationship with Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai. Though the relationship started amicably, it ended in a bitter and very public fallout, including a police complaint over the custody of a pet. During the last Lok Sabha term, Mahua faced allegations of misconduct related to gifts and privileges. She was accused of raising questions in Parliament involving Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Based on the Ethics Committee’s recommendation, she was suspended from Parliament for several months. Notably, Jai Anant Dehadrai was among those who brought the allegations forward, alongside BJP MP Nishikant Dubey.
After her break with Jai, Mahua and Pinaki grew close, eventually traveling together to Europe last year. Their bond deepened, leading to their recent wedding.
Both Mahua and Pinaki began their political careers in the Congress party. Though Mahua’s stint there was short-lived, Pinaki was first elected as a Congress MP from Puri in 1996. He later joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and won the Puri seat in 2009, 2014, and 2019. However, in the 2024 elections, BJD leader and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik did not field him as a candidate. Speculation in Odisha's political circles suggests that his relationship with Mahua might have influenced that decision, though some say Pinaki himself chose not to contest.
Mahua, meanwhile, quit JPMorgan in 2009 and entered politics through the Congress-backed "Aam Aadmi Ka Sipahi" program under Rahul Gandhi. She joined the Trinamool Congress in 2010 and was first elected as an MLA from Karimpur in 2016. Known for her eloquence, she quickly rose in the party, with Mamata Banerjee sending her to the Lok Sabha in 2019. Mahua has since been elected twice from Krishnanagar, in 2019 and again in 2024.
On Thursday evening, Mahua posted a photo on social media cutting a cake with Pinaki, signaling their new beginning. Trinamool's Abhishek Banerjee congratulated the couple, wishing them well for their new chapter together.
