Major Anti-Corruption Action in Biswanath
Biswanath, June 6: In a significant anti-corruption initiative, the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption in Assam apprehended a Deputy Superintendent and a Constable from the Excise Department in Biswanath district on charges of bribery.
The officials taken into custody are Mormeshwar Das, the Deputy Superintendent, and Constable Abhijit Baruah, who were caught in the act of accepting a bribe.
Additionally, a follow-up search at Das's home led to the recovery of ₹2.63 lakh in cash.
These arrests stemmed from a complaint filed by Diganta Borah, who sought a wine shop license under his wife's name.
Borah alleged that after the license was granted, the accused demanded a bribe of ₹1 lakh to facilitate the shop's opening, which was later negotiated down to ₹50,000.
Both Das and Borah are currently under interrogation, with the investigation continuing at the Excise Department's office.
Importantly, Borah claimed that this was not the first instance of intimidation, stating that Mormeshwar Das had previously harassed him regarding another wine shop license, persistently asking for money and liquor.
Borah expressed his frustration, saying, “He keeps demanding money from me. This time, he asked for ₹1 lakh, which was too much for me to bear. So I decided to approach the CM Vigilance team for help.”
The arrest of these two excise officials highlights the Assam government's ongoing commitment to combat corruption within its ranks.
