could reportedly scrap their pursuit of over the next few days, with reports in Germany warning of a dramatic twist. Talks are still ongoing at club level but the 22-year-old is thought to be keen on making the switch to Anfield. If the move goes ahead, it will see Liverpool pay a record transfer fee, having already made an offer in the region of £105million.

Although terms are yet to be agreed, there is an expectation that Wirtz will join the Merseyside giants in the not-too-distant future. However, they have been warned about a potential development which could put the move in serious jeopardy. It will depend on whether Wirtz plays for Germany in their Nations League third-place playoff against France this weekend.

There is a risk that Liverpool will end their pursuit of Wirtz if he picks up a serious injury while representing his country, according to . The report claims the Reds would either try to drive his price down by a considerable margin or withdraw from the move altogether.

Wirtz suffered a cruciate ligament tear in 2022 and will be desperate to avoid a recurrence of that injury this weekend. It would keep him out of action for many months and potentially lead to Liverpool shelving their interest in his signature.

The report adds that if Wirtz stays injury-free, his move to Anfield could be confirmed as early as next week. Only time will tell if Julian Nagelsmann will be prepared to risk the health of Germany's star man in order to beat France on Sunday.

Wirtz hinted that he would be involved against Les Bleus earlier this week, saying: "These are players who've performed exceptionally well all season, who can play incredible football and make a lot of great decisions.

"I'm happy, of course, to play against players like that and measure myself against them. It sounds simple, but I'm the kind of person who focuses on myself and tries to do my job as well as possible. That's what I'll try to do in the next game, too."

Reflecting on Germany's dramatic defeat to Spain in the semi-finals, Wirtz added: "We're not yet where we want to be but we're on the right path. This was the first small setback, just not a good performance and simply not enough in terms of effort.

"These are the kinds of moments where you need to regroup, reflect, and remind yourself where you stand. So yes, we're not there yet, but we're heading in the right direction."
