After almost 13 years since his last international match for India, leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has decided to retire from all forms of cricket. Known for his googlies, Chawla was a skilled spinner who made significant contributions to the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he ranks as one of the top wicket-takers in the competition’s history.

Although his international career was relatively short, Chawla was part of two World Cup-winning squads in 2007 and 2011. He made his Test debut in 2006 and played three Test matches, where his performances were inconsistent. Chawla’s rise to prominence began after he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar in the Ranji Trophy, taking the legendary batsman out with a deceptive googly.

Chawla also played for India in ODIs and T20Is, featuring in 25 and 7 matches respectively. However, his most impactful moments came in the IPL, where he represented several franchises, including Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians. His IPL career is distinguished by a high number of wickets, positioning him as one of the league’s finest bowlers.

One of Chawla’s most memorable achievements came in the IPL final, where he scored the match-winning runs for Kolkata Knight Riders, leading them to their second IPL title.

In domestic cricket, Chawla represented Uttar Pradesh, becoming a consistent performer in the Ranji Trophy. Across his first-class career, he played 137 matches, claiming 446 wickets and amassing 5,480 runs.
