Veteran actor Arun Govil, renowned for his portrayal of Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s legendary Ramayan (1987), recently expressed skepticism about modern actors stepping into the sacred role. His remarks follow the mixed reception of Adipurush, which drew flak for poor visual effects and dialogue delivery, despite starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon.
Speaking to NDTV, Arun remarked, “Several attempts—three or four—have been made to retell Ramayan, but none found true success. Honestly, in our lifetime, I don’t believe anyone should attempt another recreation. Regarding who can play Ram today, I don’t find any current Bollywood star suitable. Perhaps someone outside the industry might fit.”
Arun Govil’s depiction of Lord Ram, alongside Dipika Chikhlia as Sita, in the original series, remains deeply etched in viewers’ memories, setting a high benchmark for any remake.
Meanwhile, a fresh take on Ramayana is already in production. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, this highly awaited adaptation stars Ranbir Kapoor as Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita. Leaked on-set photos last year gave fans a glimpse of the duo’s dramatic transformations.
The ambitious project features a powerful cast, with Yash (of KGF fame) playing Ravana, and also includes Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey, and Lara Dutta. Divided into two parts, the film is set to release during Diwali 2026, with its sequel arriving in 2027.
At the Waves Summit 2025, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis praised the film’s global potential and storytelling scale.
