IT engineer James Howls, who lives in Newoport city in Wales, unknowingly made a mistake in 2013, which is rarely compensated. He threw an old hard drive into the garbage, with his 8,000 bitcoin’s ‘Private Ki’. Even though bitcoin was not taken seriously at that time, today their price has reached around Rs 6,000 crore.
Big lapse that became the biggest learning of life
James adopted a moving attitude at that time considering bitcoin as a digital use. While cleaning the office, he put an old hard drive in the garbage, thinking that it is not of any use. But shortly after, as bitcoin prices started rising, they realized their mistake.
Mission bitcoin: trying to search with technology
James prepared the entire blueprint to find that hard drive. The landfill site was planned with the help of drones, robots and state -of -the -art sensors. James also offered to bear all the expenses for this. But they just wanted the approval of the local administration.
Administrative hurdles became the largest wall
The Newport City Council flatly refused to allow excavation. He said that this could cause serious damage to the environment. Also, according to the British law, once an object is put into landfill, it is now considered to be the property of the site, not personal.
Legal battle also failed
James moved the court, but in 2024 the British court dismissed the petition saying that now there is no possibility of finding that hard drive or working.

Now the documentary will be made: “The buried bitcoin”
Although bitcoins may not be found, this unique story of James will now be seen on screen. A company of Los Angeles is creating a documentary, podcast and video series on it, which will be named “The Buried Bitcoin”. The series is expected to be released by the end of 2025.
There is still hope left
James says, “Now the whole world will know that I was not having any crazy dream, but I had a concrete plan.” Technology and time may be in their favor again, with the hope that they are still waiting today.
