Condemnation of Terrorism and Support for Armed Forces
The Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, Biman Banerjee, is set to introduce a resolution during the upcoming monsoon session starting Monday. This resolution will denounce the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, while also commending the military's response in the Basern Valley following the incident. Sources indicate that the resolution will not mention 'Operation Sindoor'. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to participate in the discussions when the proposal is presented on Tuesday. Although she had plans to travel to New Delhi on Monday, state administration sources have confirmed that her trip has been postponed.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh stated that Mamata Banerjee has made her position clear, and the party's stance is unequivocal. He emphasized that the TMC will not engage in political maneuvering regarding the situation in Pahalgam and the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. This is a national issue, and the party stands united with the soldiers and the country, intending to pay tribute collectively. Ghosh urged everyone to come together and refrain from politicizing the central government's approach. He reiterated that the resolution being introduced in the assembly will support the armed forces and oppose anti-national terrorist elements, emphasizing the desire to avoid party politics in this matter.
The resolution states, “This house expresses profound shock and sorrow over the brutal and inhumane attack on innocent tourists in the Basern Valley of Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 innocent lives, including three from West Bengal.” Additionally, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) plans to address issues related to drinking water in the Malda and Murshidabad districts during the monsoon session. The state government may also introduce a bill to amend OBC reservation, proposing the inclusion of 76 new castes in the OBC list. An official revealed that the state cabinet approved this addition based on recommendations from the West Bengal Backward Classes Commission, increasing the total number of ethnic groups to 140.
