An influential decision maker in BCCI has revealed that Shreyas Iyer has officially joined the race for ‘India’s White-ball captaincy’ after his success as captain with Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025.

Shreyas Iyer is the only captain to lead three different teams to the IPL final – Delhi Capitals in 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and Punjab Kings in 2025. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title win in the 2024 season.

Shreyas Iyer has amassed 604 runs in 17 games, making him the top scorer for Punjab Kings. His 87* in the Qualifier 01 match against the Mumbai Indians, where he scored six half-centuries, will be remembered for a long very time.

Right now, he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL, we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” said the official.

At the moment Suryakumar Yadav is the T20I captain, while Rohit Sharma is the ODI captain. For India’s test series against England, Shreyas Iyer has not been selected.

Shubman Gill has been named as the test captain, but the verdict is still pending. However, Shreyas Iyer ought to be considered as one of the best captains in Indian Cricket.

Similar to his legendary India teammate Rohit Sharma, he has a ‘Bindaas Mumbaikar’ quality, like calm MS Dhoni and an aggressive streak like Virat Kohli when the need arises. However, he hasn’t got a chance to captain India men’s team in any forat of the game.

Shreyas Iyer has played 14 tests, 70 ODIs and 51 T20Is so far, last played a Test match for India in February 2024, and his last T20I appearance was against Australia in December 2023.

Shreyas Iyer was absent from the India squad for the five match test series against England. It was expected that he would be considered for a place in India’s Test team for the upcoming assignment after the retirement of senior batters like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Shreyas Iyer is playing for SoBo Mumbai Falcons in T20 Mumbai 2025 these days, will be seen playing for India in August 2025 when the Men in Blues travel to Bangladesh for the three-match ODI and three-match T20I series.
