While World Environment Day is often marked by symbolic tree planting, this year the spotlight turned to those who have been nurturing the city’s green cover for decades. In a special initiative by Vijay Welfare Trust, in collaboration with former ward committee members, 29 committed tree lovers from across the city were honoured for their long-standing dedication to environmental conservation.

"These individuals have spent over 20 to 25 years planting and caring for trees—some managing to plant over 500 trees. Their dedication included regular watering, applying fertilizers, timely pruning, and protecting the trees from damage. Many of them even faced challenges in sourcing water and stood firm against tree cutting, all while expecting nothing in return," said the organisor.
The felicitation ceremony was held to recognize these silent guardians of greenery and to highlight the core message of "Plant Trees, Protect Trees". Certificates of appreciation were awarded to each honoree, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to maintaining ecological balance in the city.
The event served as a reminder that sustaining the environment requires not just planting trees, but also years of commitment and care—a legacy these 29 green warriors proudly represent.
