New Delhi: A 60-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district died after allegedly slitting his own throat on the occasion of Bakrid, claiming he was offering himself in sacrifice instead of a goat.
The deceased, identified as Ish Mohammed Ansari, reportedly entered a hut outside his home in Udhoopur village after returning from Eid prayers at the dargah of Sultan Syed Makhdoom Ashraf Shah. An hour later, his wife heard his cries and found him lying in a pool of blood with a knife beside him.
Succumbs during treatment
Family members and neighbours rushed him to the district hospital with police assistance. He was later referred to Gorakhpur Medical College, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Local reports claim Ansari left a suicide note in which he stated: “Humans raise goats like their own sons only to sacrifice them. They are living beings too. I am offering myself in the name of Allah and His messenger. No one has killed me. Bury me peacefully, without fear. My grave should be where the sacrificial post stands.”
Police, however, have not confirmed the existence of the note. “Preliminary investigation suggests that Ansari inflicted the wound himself. However, we are probing the matter from all angles,” said Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Arvind Kumar Verma while talking to news agency PTI.
