Income tax return filing for the financial year 2024-25 or assessment year 2025-26 has started. ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms are ready for online filing. Form 16 and Form 16A have special importance in return filing. In this article, we will tell you what Form 16/16A is.

Form 16 and Form 16A are considered important certificates (TDS certificate details) of Tax Deduction at Source i.e. TDS. Under the Income Tax Act, the employer or the tax-deducting institution issues it to the taxpayer. Your employer or any institution collects tax from you and deposits it with the government. TDS certificate is its proof.

What kind of information is there in Form 16
The company or organization in which the taxpayer works deducts TDS while giving him salary (Form 16 for salaried employees). Form 16 contains complete information about the amount deducted as tax i.e. TDS. It contains the certificate number, TRACES watermark, and information about how much tax was deducted every quarter and how much was deposited with the government. It contains the PAN number of the employee and the TAN number of the employer. It contains details of the salary given to the employee by the company. If the employee has claimed deduction under 80C, 80D or other sections, then its information is also there.

These two forms have been opened for ITR filing, know which form is right for you?

Form 16 has two parts.

Form 16 has two parts - Part A and Part B. Part A contains the summary of TDS and Part B contains details of the salary given to the employee and the deduction. Both Part A and Part B should be downloaded from the TRACES website as only that is considered valid.

If your TDS or TCS has been deducted, do not file ITR now even by mistake
Where is Form 16A given

The taxpayer gets income in the form of interest, commission, professional fees, etc. on fixed deposits (FD). The bank or company paying interest, commission or fees gives Form 16A to the taxpayer. This form contains the certificate number and Traces watermark. It contains the details of how much tax was deducted every quarter and deposited to the government. It contains the PAN of the taxpayer and the TAN of the tax-deducting institution. It also contains the details of the nature of payment and how much money was paid. Like Form 16, in this also only the certificate downloaded from the Traces website is valid.
