In a candid chat about his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan, now 60, addressed buzz around his on‑screen romance with Genelia D’Souza, who is 23 years his junior at 37. Despite the age difference, Aamir emphasized that “age is no barrier for actors anymore”.
Sharing insights with The Indian Express, Aamir said: “We’re both playing characters in their early 40s. She’s around that age...I’m 60, but we have the advantage of VFX...So, age is not a barrier for actors anymore.” He recalled earlier times when prosthetics were needed for role adjustments—citing Anil Kapoor’s Eeshwar (1989), where the actor convincingly portrayed an octogenarian despite being much younger. Thanks to modern visual effects, actors today can be made to look elder or younger seamlessly.
Aamir also acknowledged the public connection between Genelia and his nephew Imran Khan, recalling how Genelia debuted in Hindi cinema opposite Imran in 2008’s Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. Reflecting on it, he remarked: “That thought did come to me… ab Imran bhi kaafi meri age ka ho gaya hai” (laughs), highlighting time’s passing.
In Sitaare Zameen Par, Genelia plays Aamir’s wife—a debut pairing for the two. The film is a Hindi adaptation of the Spanish hit Campeones and draws parallels to Aamir’s own 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par. Directed by R.S. Prasanna, the story follows Aamir as a coach training a basketball team of differently‑abled youngsters. The film, marking Aamir’s return after Laal Singh Chaddha, is set to release on June 20, 2025.
Aamir summed it up succinctly: with evolving technology and audience perceptions, casting based on age has taken a backseat—“age is no longer a barrier
