Amid growing complaints about the 'Ask Photos' feature, Google has put a break on its testing. It is expected to return with a new and improved version in two weeks.

Google has temporarily stopped its new AI feature 'Ask Photos' for the time being. This decision has been taken after continuous complaints from users, in which the feature was said to be slow speed, low quality and difficulty in use.

The 'Ask Photos' feature was launched last year as a test for some selected users. Its purpose was that people could search for a specific picture in their photo gallery by asking questions in common language. For example, users could ask, "Show me photos from last Diwali" or "Show me the photo that has a cake."

This feature is based on Google's Gemini AI model, which shows the correct result to the user by understanding the text, faces, events and other things present in the photos.

But recently many users expressed their displeasure over its performance. After this, Google's product manager Jamie Aspinall informed on X (earlier Twitter) that "Ask Photos is not at the level we thought." He also said that the feature has been closed for very few users at the moment and the company will launch it again after improving it.

New and better version will come soon

Google has said that a new version of this feature will be introduced within about two weeks, in which speed, quality of results and user experience will be improved.

Improvements in other search features

Along with 'Ask Photos', some improvements have also been made in the general search capability of Google Photos. Now users can use "quotes" ("") while searching for photos so that they can get the most accurate result. Such as file name, camera model, caption or text present in the photo.

If users do not use quotes, then now Google will also show them visual matches i.e. results similar to the pictures.

Continuous monitoring of AI features

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Google has stopped one of its AI features midway. Earlier, the company had also temporarily shut down features like 'AI Overview' and 'Gemini Image Generator', when complaints of incorrect information or historical errors were received about them.

Google's commitment

Google says that it wants to make photo browsing easier, faster and closer to human language through AI. The company intends to provide users with the facility to search directly in spoken language instead of just typing keywords.

Although 'Ask Photos' is currently closed, its main purpose still remains - to give users a smart, easy and modern way to access their memories.
