
In today's time, relationships are formed and broken rapidly through social media and dating apps. The university believes that such academic guidance will promote emotional understanding among the youth.
In the digital age, youth are often seen struggling with emotional trauma. In such a situation, Delhi University is going to start a new optional course for graduation students from the 2025-26 academic session. This course has been named 'Negotiating Intimate Relationships'.
This course will be started by the Psychology Department of the University. It is worth noting that this course was listed on the official website of the university in 2023, but now it is being formally started for all graduation students. This is a four-credit course, which can be chosen by students of any faculty.
Why is this course needed?
In today's times, relationships are formed and broken rapidly through social media and dating apps. In such a situation, many times students start struggling with emotional trauma. The university believes that such academic guidance will promote emotional understanding and mental strength in the youth. In recent years, incidents of toxic relationships, mental stress and violence have increased among college students. In such a situation, this course has become the need of the hour.
This course is divided into four units.
- Psychological understanding of friendship and close relationships
- Theories related to love and sexuality - such as Sternberg's Triangle Love Theory and Two-Factor Theory
- Identification of threats in relationships - such as jealousy, emotional control, and violence
- Strategies for building healthy and lasting relationships
How will the study be done in this course?
Every week, students will have to do three lectures and one tutorial. There will be no practical in this, but the tutorial will include activities like film reviews, group discussions, analysis of social media and debate on dating culture. At the same time, by analyzing films like 'Kabir Singh' and 'Titanic', an attempt will be made to understand how love and conflict have been shown in cinema.

The main objective of this course is to increase emotional intelligence in students. Students will get to learn many things in this course. It is believed that such courses will not only give academic knowledge to the students, but will also help in improving personal life.
