Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt were back at the helm of BBC Breakfast on Friday (13 June), with the pair kicking off the episode with some heartbreaking news.

News of Israel launching a major attack on Iran broke overnight and has continued to dominate the headlines, with Naga and Charlie reporting on the strikes at the start of Friday's episode.

"Israel has carried out air strikes on Iran overnight, claiming it was a preemptive attack to stop the country from developing a nuclear bomb," Naga announced.

"Iranian state television is reporting that two senior nuclear scientists and the head of the Revolutionary Guard have been killed."

Charlie then provided further details, adding, "Loud explosions were heard in the capital city of Tehran and at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, around 200 miles south."

He continued: " has declared a state of emergency and warned its citizens to expect immediate retaliatory strikes by missile and drone. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation to curtail Iran's nuclear capability is not yet over."

BBC Breakfast then showed a speech from Israel's Prime Minister, before going live to Jerusalem, where BBC's Middle East correspondent Hugo Bachega had all of the latest updates on the strikes.

News of the strikes broke overnight, with Israel's military releasing a statement, where it claimed that a "pre-emptive, precise, combined offensive based on high-quality intelligence" had been launched, named Operation Rising Lion.

"Dozens of IAF jets completed the first stage that included strikes on dozens of military targets, including nuclear targets in different areas of Iran," the statement continued.

The country's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said that the attack was to "roll back the Iranian threat to Israel's very survival" and would last for "as many days as it takes to remove the threat".

Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has warned of "severe punishment" and claimed residential areas have been targeted in the strikes, the Tasnim news agency has reported.

BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One from 6am on weekdays
